The National Working Committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has disowned an unauthorized 59-member Presidential Campaign Council floated by the “OK Movement,” a support coalition drumming up backing for Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 polls.
The party’s leadership warned on Saturday that it will not tolerate rogue formations running parallel party organs, declaring the council illegal, void, and of no operational effect.
The crackdown follows the unveiling of the 59-member campaign body earlier in the week by party operative John Ugulu, who rolled out an elaborate apparatus of zonal and state coordinators tasked with driving the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket nationwide.
In a tersely worded rejoinder issued in Abuja, NDC National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses told party members, the media, and the public to treat the council as non-existent.
Moses insisted that statutory authority to constitute, inaugurate, or run campaign organs belongs solely to the national executive.
“Only the party leadership has the authority to constitute and announce a Presidential Campaign Council,” Moses said.
He maintained that no candidate, prominent individual, or support coalition holds the mandate to establish operational campaign machineries in the party’s name without prior, written clearance from the National Working Committee.
While acknowledging the enthusiasm of independent grassroots formations, the NDC leadership cautioned against tendencies that undermine constituted authority or turn support groups into alternative power centers.
The party reminded members with grievances to explore internal constitutional avenues rather than staging public confrontations against the hierarchy.
The party also moved against Ugulu, referring him to its national disciplinary committee for immediate trial.
