El-Rufai’s Doctor Admits Writing Controversial Medical Report, Denies Forgery

The medical doctor behind the controversial medical report submitted in support of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s bail application has admitted writing the document but denied forging or falsifying any records.

Dr. Bello Abubakar, an oncologist, made the disclosure in a statement to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), insisting he prepared the report in his professional capacity and was not part of any scheme to mislead the court.

Abubakar also denied knowing Mohammed Bala Aliyu, the individual accused of using the report to swear to an affidavit supporting El-Rufai’s bail application.

“I cannot recall anybody with the name Mohammed Bala Aliyu, and I have never authorised him to depose an affidavit,” he said.

The ICPC had accused the doctor of issuing a false medical report intended to influence proceedings before the Kaduna State High Court. The disputed document, dated June 10, 2026, was titled Medical Report and Expert Opinion for Urgent Medical Intervention.

However, Abubakar maintained that the report was prepared legitimately and rejected allegations that he conspired to produce false information.

He also revealed that his relationship with El-Rufai dates back to about 2005, explaining that he first met the former governor through his wife, whose first child he delivered, and has treated El-Rufai on several occasions since he registered as a patient at the National Hospital, Abuja.
