Peter Okoye Rejects Calls To Quit Music At 44

Nigerian singer Peter Okoye has dismissed calls for him to retire from music after a social media user suggested that he was too old to continue performing Afrobeats.

The debate began when an X user claimed the 44-year-old artiste was nearing 50 and should consider stepping away from the music scene. The post accompanied a clip from one of Mr P’s music videos.

Media personality Do2dtun quickly challenged the criticism, arguing that several internationally acclaimed artistes, including Celine Dion, Shakira and Beyoncé, remain active in music despite being older than Mr P.

Reacting to the discussion, Peter Okoye suggested that many of those attacking him were disappointed supporters of the now-defunct P-Square. He accused critics of hypocrisy, noting that they celebrate international stars such as Usher, Beyoncé and Chris Brown for continuing their careers while questioning his own longevity in the industry.

The singer maintained that age should not determine an artiste’s relevance, insisting that talent and performance remain the true measure of success in music.
