The Defence Headquarters Nigeria has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over alleged mutiny aimed at overthrowing the government.
The inauguration, which took place on April 24, 2026, follows an earlier statement issued by the military high command on January 26, 2026, addressing the matter.
In a statement signed by Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the move was described as a critical step toward reinforcing discipline, accountability, and the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority.
According to the Defence Headquarters, proceedings of the court martial will be conducted with strict adherence to due process, ensuring fairness, impartiality, and respect for the rule of law.
“The process will guarantee that justice is served without fear or favour, with all cases handled within the extant legal frameworks of the military justice system,” the statement said.
The DHQ further reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and discipline within the ranks, while assuring that the rights of the accused personnel would be respected and the principles of fair hearing upheld throughout the trial.
