M23 Rebels Declare Ceasefire In Goma For Humanitarian Reasons

Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, who have taken control of Goma, a key city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, have announced a unilateral ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to reach displaced civilians.

The rebels declared the ceasefire on Monday in response to growing concerns over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.

The United Nations has reported rising health risks, ongoing food shortages, and the continued closure of schools and banks.

Despite the ceasefire declaration, the Congolese government has yet to respond. Meanwhile, the G7 nations and the European Union have strongly condemned the M23 offensive, calling it a violation of DR Congo’s sovereignty.

According to the UN, at least 900 people have died, and nearly 3,000 have been injured in the conflict.

Since the start of 2025, over 400,000 people have been displaced, adding to the hundreds of thousands already affected by years of conflict in the region.

The rebel coalition, known as the Congo River Alliance, claims it does not intend to expand its territorial control.

However, they have accused the Congolese military of carrying out airstrikes on areas under their control, resulting in civilian casualties.

As international pressure mounts, DR Congo’s communications minister, Patrick Muyaya, has called for sanctions against Rwanda, accusing it of destabilizing the region.

Meanwhile, Rwandan President Paul Kagame has denied direct involvement but reaffirmed his country’s commitment to protecting its interests.

Human rights organizations continue to urge stronger action to address the crisis and ensure lasting peace in the region.
