The Lagos State Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the federal government’s Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to kickstart exploratory work on the 68-kilometer Green Line rail project.
This ambitious project will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, enhancing transportation and economic activities within the state.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced the development on Monday, calling it a “landmark initiative” for advancing the state’s infrastructure.
“This project will significantly improve connectivity, ease movement, and boost economic activities between key areas in Lagos, including Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ajah,” Omotoso said.
The federal government has allocated ₦146.14 billion as counterpart funding for the Green Line Metro Rail project within the 2025 budget.
This investment is part of a broader ₦175.84 billion allocation for national priorities, including infrastructure development.
The Green Line rail network will integrate seamlessly with existing transportation systems, including the ongoing Lagos Red Line and Blue Line rail projects.
Omotoso highlighted the state’s infrastructural achievements, noting that 36 road projects were completed in 2024, while 51 others are at various stages of development.
On the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), Omotoso revealed progress on several BRT terminals and supporting infrastructure.
He noted that the Abule Egba and Iyana Ipaja terminals are advancing well, while those in Ajah are near completion.
Additionally, work continues on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, particularly the Doyin Orile to Mile 2 section, which is under active development.
Omotoso also celebrated the commissioning of the first phase of the Red Line rail project, a 27-kilometer route from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos.
Since beginning operations on October 15, 2024, the Red Line has served an average of 500,000 passengers daily, featuring eight stations and multiple overpasses and pedestrian bridges.
He added that the second phase of the Blue Line project, which will extend from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is underway.
The government aims to integrate the Red and Blue lines to create a comprehensive rail network supporting Lagos’ growing population and economic expansion.
“Our vision remains clear—to establish a robust and interconnected rail network that will transform transportation in Lagos while driving economic growth,” Omotoso concluded.
