INEC Proposes Computer-Generated Voting Slips To Supplement PVCs

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a shift in voting requirements, recommending computer-generated voting slips as an alternative to Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). 

This suggestion comes with the implementation of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

Speaking in Abuja during a quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu emphasized that PVCs should no longer be the sole requirement for voter accreditation. Instead, computer-generated slips could suffice, potentially eliminating issues like PVC collection delays and voter card purchasing schemes.

Yakubu highlighted that INEC has completed a comprehensive review of the 2023 General Election, identifying 142 recommendations to enhance electoral processes, with 86 requiring administrative action. 

He also noted plans to introduce early voting for essential workers, advocate for diaspora voting, and establish an electoral offences tribunal.

The Chairman revealed plans for collaboration with agencies like the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to clean up the voter register and emphasized robust voter education to combat misinformation.

These reforms aim to streamline voter access, reduce costs, and increase transparency in Nigeria’s electoral system.
