The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has commended the governor of Rivers State Simi Fubara for his efforts in securing peace in the state as the Judicial Commission of Inquiry investigating the series of arson attacks on some Local Government Area Secretariats concludes it assignment, in a statement by the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko it called for full accountability to ensure such incidents do not reoccur, claiming that the attacks
It said the attack after the successful local government elections was a serious threat to democracy.
The group recalled that the Judicial Commission, Chaired by Hon. Justice Ibiwengi Minakiri, was inaugurated by Governor Fubara mandating it to investigate the killings, arson, and destruction of local government properties as well delivering a comprehensive report of the incidents.
The Association pointed out that the Commission, comprising seven members, was given a month to complete it’s mandate and submit recommendations.
“Since its formation, the Commission has actively engaged with affected local government areas, conducting on-site assessments in the presence of the press.
“These reported assessments included visits to impacted LGAs, such as Eleme, Ikwerre, Emohua, Obio/Akpor, and Khana, revealing substantial damage from looting, arson, and explosions.
“During these inspections, Justice Minakiri emphasized the Commission’s dedication to transparency and thoroughness, urging full cooperation from local councils and communities.
Justice Minakiri, in a statement to the press, noted the severe impact on Eleme LGA, where losses were so extensive that the council headquarters became almost non-operational.” The statement read in part.
According to the group, Ikwerre and Emohua Councils were worst hit as there were severe destruction of structures which is impeding smooth return to operations.
HURIWA frowned at the lapses of The Police in the face of the attacks and arsons as officers of the force were withdrawn from the facilities, making the activities of the hoodlums easy.
The group believes in the Intergrity of the Commission Members as constituted and their ability to unveil the truth and making same public.
“The people of Rivers State, and indeed all Nigerians, deserve to know the truth.” HURIWA stated.
The association stressed that justice should not only address the destruction of properties but also the loss of lives and the disruption caused by the violence.
HURIWA commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his bold decision to establish the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, despite the sensitive nature of the investigation and the complex political landscape.
It emphasized that the Governor’s commitment to transparency and accountability has set a standard for other states facing similar challenges to democracy.
While stating that by allowing the Commission to conduct its work without interference, Governor Fubara has demonstrated a firm stance against impunity, HURIWA encouraged the governor to remain resolute as the Commission prepares to submit its final report, urging that the findings be acted upon promptly.
As the Commission is rounding off it’s assignment, HURIWA urge the government of Rivers State to stay committed to implementing the recommendations of The Commission:
“Governor Fubara’s resolve to address these critical issues, coupled with the expected impartiality of the Judicial Commission, signals that Rivers State is moving toward a more accountable and secure future.” HURIWA concluded.
