Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Aviation Village, an estate that will contain a modern residential complex for staff in aviation sector of the economy, the event took place at The Victor Attah International Airport and marked the first phase of a transformative initiative that aims to stand Akwa Ibom State out as the premier aviation hub in the Gulf of Guinea.
According to the governor, the Aviation Village was in tandem with his administration’s commitment to the expansion of the aviation ecosystem, which will enhance infrastructure, and improve service delivery in the state.
“The Aviation Village is more than just a housing project; it’s a strategic step towards realizing our vision of becoming a major aviation hub for Nigeria and the region”.
“The first phase will provide much-needed accommodation for airport workers, with the second phase introducing an aviation school and other critical facilities. In total, 12 parastatals will benefit, directly impacting the efficiency of our airport operations.” Gov Eno said.
Governor Eno said that work will start immediately as some contractors had already been mobilized, the project will be completed in 12 months according to the governor.
The governor took time to elucidate the giant strides in the aviation sector by his administration which includes the recent procurement of four new aircraft for Ibom Air, noting that these efforts will result in turning Akwa Ibom into an aviation hub, creating jobs and boosting the state’s economy.
He envisioned an Akwa Ibom State in 2025 as a dynamic construction site, with several large-scale projects planned, while emphasizing that the state’s 2025 budget has captured these gigantic initiatives, with contractors mobilized to deliver results and on time.
The governor also said that he plans to lay foundations for Elderly Peoples Home and Medical Village for doctors working at The State Specialist Hospital.
“We are working to upgrade the Ibom Specialist Hospital to its original vision—a world-class healthcare facility,” Governor Eno explained. “We are partnering with international organizations, recruiting top doctors, and building accommodation for them. This will be managed in the same way as Ibom Air—government-run but managed with the efficiency of a private concern.” He said.
The State Commissioner for Housing, Otuekong Raphael Bassey while presenting a breakdown of the Aviation Village project said that it will span 15.072 hectares, including 62 two-bedroom flats, 55 three-bedroom flats, a primary school, and other amenities.
