Tinubu Withholds Approval For Federal University Of Education Bill

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declined to sign the bill seeking to establish a Federal University of Education in Numan, Adamawa State, citing legal inconsistencies in the proposed legislation.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and read during plenary on Tuesday by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Tinubu stated that he made the decision on December 23, 2024.

“Pursuant to Section 58(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I hereby convey to the House of Representatives my decision to decline presidential assent to the Federal University of Education, Numan Establishment Bill 2024 recently passed by the National Assembly,” the letter read.

The President highlighted a major inconsistency in the bill, specifically in Section 22, which assigns the authority to dispose of university land to the state governor, instead of the President, as required for federal government-owned land.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives adjourned plenary till Wednesday in honor of the late Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, in line with parliamentary tradition.

During the session, her usual seat in the chamber was draped with a white cloth, symbolizing respect and mourning.
