LP Leadership Battle: Obi’s Faction Sues Abure In Supreme Court

The 29-member caretaker committee established by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced on Sunday its decision to challenge the leadership of the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, at the Supreme Court.

In a statement jointly signed by the committee’s National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, and National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, the group expressed dissatisfaction with the recent Court of Appeal ruling that upheld Abure’s leadership following the party’s March 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The committee argued that the appellate court’s decision had raised critical issues that only the Supreme Court could address. 

It reassured party supporters that their legal team had been instructed to pursue further clarification.

The leadership dispute within the Labour Party intensified after the National Executive Committee attempted to remove Abure from office, leading to the formation of the caretaker committee chaired by Usman and Nwokocha as Secretary.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal’s ruling, delivered by a three-member panel led by Justice Hamma Barka, reaffirmed the earlier Federal High Court decision recognizing Abure’s leadership and instructing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize him as the legitimate party leader.
