Nigerian actor and social commentator, Adebowale Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has explained why he reduced his public criticism of the government, citing exhaustion, public backlash and threats linked to his activism.
The actor spoke after Wazobia FM shared an old interview in which he discussed threats he received during the #EndSARS protests. He later clarified on X that the interview was recorded more than two years ago but said the concerns he raised remained relevant.
Mr Macaroni said he had become tired of repeatedly speaking about the same issues without seeing enough public action. According to him, Nigerians often complain about problems but quickly move on.
He also recalled that his political commentary had attracted insults, criticism and threats from some members of the public, including people he believed he was speaking for.
The actor referred to a statement he made in March 2026 criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying that period marked the point when he decided to take a break from sustained political commentary.
Mr Macaroni also said he did not intend to go into politics, explaining that his experiences with some people who entered politics had influenced his decision.
Reflecting on the #EndSARS period, he said the protests came with serious threats that worried his family, but he continued to speak publicly on national issues.
He also recalled his involvement during the 2023 election, when he encouraged Nigerians to participate and publicly stated his preferred candidate while saying he was not directing others to support the same person.
Mr Macaroni said he is currently taking a break from political commentary to focus more on his artistic work, stressing that his decision should not be interpreted as a loss of concern for Nigeria.
He added that he would be willing to speak publicly again when he believes Nigerians are ready to demand greater accountability.
