Why It’s Harder For Female Artistes To Succeed — Fave

Nigerian singer Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, popularly known as Fave, has spoken about the challenges female artistes face in the music industry, particularly the scrutiny surrounding their appearance.

Speaking on the Afropolitan podcast, Fave said female musicians are often judged by what they wear and how they look before their musical talent is considered.

According to her, women in the industry are subjected to expectations about their bodies and fashion choices that can influence how audiences perceive their work.

Fave said the focus can shift from music to people’s perceptions of female artistes’ appearance and sexuality.

She also argued that female artistes may be expected to dress in ways considered acceptable before audiences pay attention to their music.

The singer contrasted this with the treatment of male artistes, saying men are generally not subjected to the same level of scrutiny over their appearance.

Despite the challenges she highlighted, Fave noted that female artistes continue to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s music industry.
