Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has attributed the delay in opening the newly completed Opebi-Odoiya Alaro Bridge to the ongoing installation of a 25-metre steel monument at the project site, assuring motorists that the bridge will become fully operational before the holidays.

Sanwo-Olu, who disclosed this in a post following an inspection of the project on Sunday, said he had earlier announced that the bridge would open to traffic by the end of September based on the work schedule presented to him.

However, with work still ongoing, the governor said he visited the site to assess the level of progress and establish the reasons for the delay.

He explained that the monument was designed to preserve the history of the Cane Village, which once occupied the area and was renowned for its cane market.

According to him, the structure features four interwoven hands of cane, symbolising the area’s heritage while serving as a new landmark to enhance the beauty of the corridor.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that three of the monument’s four steel components had been fully assembled and installed, while work was ongoing on the final section.

He said the installation was about 80 per cent complete, adding that a few more days would be needed to finish the work.

The governor stressed that safety considerations made it necessary to complete and securely install every section of the monument before opening the road to traffic.

Acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the delay, Sanwo-Olu appealed to motorists for patience, assuring them that the bridge would be fully operational before the holiday period.

He said the project, upon completion, would provide motorists with a smoother journey while adding a new landmark to the Lagos landscape.
