Arsenal moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday after a 2-0 victory over Everton, capitalising on the leaders’ 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

The Gunners seized the opportunity at the Emirates Stadium to draw level with City on 21 points after eight matches, with Mikel Arteta’s side sitting second on goal difference.

City’s perfect start to the league campaign came to an end at Villa Park, where Nicolas Jackson scored twice to hand Aston Villa a 2-1 victory despite Erling Haaland’s second-half equaliser.

The defeat opened the door for Arsenal, who responded with a composed display to secure their seventh league win of the season and intensify the early title race.

Arsenal took the lead in the seventh minute when Ezri Konsa reacted quickest after Martin Ødegaard’s corner caused confusion in Everton’s penalty area, turning the ball home from close range.

The hosts continued to press for a second goal, with Noni Madueke and Declan Rice creating opportunities, but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford kept his side in contention with several saves.

Gabriel Magalhães eventually sealed the victory in the 68th minute, rising to meet Ben White’s cross and heading home to give Arsenal breathing space.

Everton struggled to mount a sustained response as Arsenal controlled the closing stages to secure all three points.

At Villa Park, Jackson struck early to put Aston Villa ahead after capitalising on a defensive error by City. Haaland restored parity with a header shortly after the interval, but Jackson struck again in the 60th minute to restore Villa’s lead.
