South Africa’s Suspended Deputy Police Chief Resigns Amid Corruption Probe

South Africa’s suspended deputy police chief, Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned from the police service amid corruption allegations and criminal charges, marking a fresh development in investigations into alleged misconduct within the force.

His lawyers submitted the resignation letter on Monday, shortly before a disciplinary hearing against him was scheduled to begin.

Police authorities said the resignation would be treated as a dishonourable discharge because disciplinary proceedings were still ongoing.

Sibiya remains in custody following his arrest last month over allegations of rape and grooming a minor. He has denied the charges, while his bail application was postponed until October 13.

He is also under investigation by a judicial commission examining alleged corruption within the police and links between officers and criminal networks.

During testimony before the commission, Sibiya denied allegations that he received substantial sums of money and gifts from suspected criminals.

He had been suspended since September last year as investigations into alleged police corruption continued.
