• Reveals 14,000 Play4aChild Beneficiaries, 100 Women Supported

OPay, a digital financial services provider, has expanded its corporate social impact interventions in Nigeria, deploying technology, partnerships and resources to support education, youth innovation and women’s economic empowerment.

The company’s social impact programmes, include the OPay Scholars Programme, Play4aChild initiative, Women Empowerment Programme and the National Innovation Challenge, with the interventions collectively reaching thousands of Nigerians.

A major component of the initiative is the OPay Scholars Programme, backed by a ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship commitment.

More than 1,200 beneficiaries have so far been reached under the scholarship programme, which is designed to provide sustained educational support rather than a one-off intervention.

The programme brings together initiatives including the National Innovation Challenge and OPay Futures, with the broader objective of helping young Nigerians gain access to education, develop relevant skills and improve their prospects for the future.

The company’s National Innovation Challenge, implemented in partnership with Google and the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, is focused on young Nigerians with technological skills and ideas capable of addressing real-world challenges.

The initiative seeks to move beneficiaries beyond being consumers of technology to becoming creators and problem-solvers by providing opportunities to develop their technical capabilities and innovative ideas.

Play4aChild Reaches 14,000

OPay’s Play4aChild initiative has also emerged as a major component of its social intervention programme, with more than 14,000 direct beneficiaries reached since its inception.

The programme provides educational materials and other forms of support intended to improve children’s learning experiences and reduce some of the everyday barriers to effective education.

According to the company, access to appropriate learning materials can make school more engaging while supporting children’s learning and development.

Beyond education and youth development, OPay has identified women’s economic empowerment as another key area of intervention.

Through its Women Empowerment Programme, more than 100 women have received support through skills development, capacity building and startup assistance.

The initiative is designed to equip women with practical skills and resources to generate income, strengthen existing businesses and improve their financial independence.

The company’s approach reflects a broader concept of financial inclusion that extends beyond access to financial services to include the capacity and opportunities required for people to participate meaningfully in economic activities.

OPay said its interventions leverage technology, partnerships and its digital reach to deliver resources and opportunities at scale.

The partnership with Google and 3MTT on the National Innovation Challenge, for instance, combines corporate resources with technical expertise and existing national platforms to reach young Nigerians with technology and innovation opportunities.

The initiatives are focused on translating technology and corporate resources into measurable social outcomes, with beneficiaries including students receiving educational support, young innovators developing solutions, children gaining access to learning materials and women receiving skills and startup assistance.

The programmes also underscore an approach to corporate social responsibility that places emphasis on measurable impact, with beneficiary numbers providing indicators of the reach of the interventions.

With more than 1,200 beneficiaries under the OPay Scholars Programme, over 14,000 through Play4aChild and more than 100 women supported through the Women Empowerment Programme, the company said its broader objective is to demonstrate how a technology-driven organisation can deploy its resources, networks and partnerships to create educational, economic and social opportunities.

The interventions come against the backdrop of persistent challenges around education, youth development and economic empowerment in Nigeria, areas where corporate initiatives complement the efforts of government, schools, communities and development organisations.

OPay’s social impact programmes therefore extend its role beyond financial technology, positioning technology as a vehicle for expanding access to education, innovation and economic opportunity.

The initiatives ultimately underscore the potential of technology not only as a tool for facilitating financial transactions, but also as an instrument for creating opportunities and improving livelihoods.
