Spain Raises Alert In Ceuta Over Fresh Migrant Crossing Threat

Spanish authorities have stepped up security in Ceuta following social-media calls for migrants to attempt another mass crossing from Morocco into the Spanish enclave.

The alert comes weeks after more than 70,000 people reportedly entered Ceuta by swimming around the border fence on July 30 and 31. Most were subsequently returned to Morocco, although several thousand remained in the territory.

Authorities are now preparing for another reported attempt on September 23, with Spanish forces conducting patrols along the border and officials monitoring online activity.

Spain’s Foreign Minister said he remains in regular contact with his Moroccan counterpart as both sides work to prevent a repeat of the earlier influx.

Spanish officials said the latest social-media messages appear to be attracting less attention, but Ceuta remains on heightened alert as security agencies prepare for any possible border surge.
