The United States has delivered a fresh consignment of military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to confront terrorism and other security threats.
The United States Africa Command, AFRICOM, disclosed the development on Thursday, saying the equipment was transported into the country by a US Air Force C-17 aircraft over the weekend.
According to AFRICOM, the shipment was supplied under a foreign military sales agreement between Nigeria and the United States.
The command said the delivery forms part of the wider security partnership between both countries and is intended to support Nigeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
“PARTNERSHIP IN ACTION: A US Air Force C-17 delivers equipment to the Nigerian Air Force this weekend,” AFRICOM stated.
It added that the equipment would further strengthen bilateral military cooperation and assist Nigeria in confronting terrorist threats in the region.
The latest delivery comes as Nigerian security forces continue operations against terrorist organisations, armed groups and other criminal networks in different parts of the country.
Nigeria has maintained defence and security cooperation with the United States through military training, intelligence support, capacity-building programmes and the acquisition of defence equipment.
The Nigerian Air Force has also played a major role in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, particularly in areas affected by insurgency and armed violence.
AFRICOM did not provide a detailed public breakdown of the specific equipment contained in the latest delivery.
The shipment nevertheless represents another step in Washington’s continuing defence relationship with Abuja as both countries seek to improve regional security cooperation.
The United States has repeatedly identified Nigeria as an important security partner in West Africa, where terrorism and transnational organised crime remain major challenges.
The latest military support is therefore expected to complement Nigeria’s broader efforts to improve operational capability and strengthen its response to security threats.
