The battle for Europe’s most coveted club trophy is set to explode as the UEFA Champions League returns, with Paris Saint-Germain chasing an unprecedented third consecutive title and a powerful pack of English, Spanish and German giants plotting their downfall.
The league phase begins on Tuesday, with the final scheduled for June 5 next year in Madrid.
PSG enter the competition as defending champions after dominating Europe for the past two seasons, but doubts are already growing over their ability to complete a historic three-peat.
One of the biggest threats is Arsenal, who reached last season’s final and are being tipped as favourites to finally lift the trophy.
A three-time consecutive Champions League triumph would put PSG in rare company, but one analyst believes the French champions could fall short.
“If PSG do the three-peat, it would be an incredible achievement,” he said. “I don’t think they will do it. I think two in a row is already special – three in a row is impossible unless you’ve got Cristiano Ronaldo in your team, which they don’t.”
Despite his doubts, he expects PSG to remain a major force.
“I think they will be close. I think they’ll reach at least the semi-final, but I think going for three in a row is tough.”
The analyst dismissed José Mourinho’s Real Madrid project as unconvincing and instead backed Arsenal and Bayern Munich to contest the final.
“I don’t believe fully in the Jose Mourinho-Real Madrid project, so I would go for Bayern Munich and Arsenal to reach the final,” he said.
He also pointed to Arsenal’s defensive strength as the decisive factor in his prediction.
“They have the best defence in Europe by far and that’s what wins you titles,” he declared, backing Arsenal to go all the way.
“My prediction would be PSG to reach the last four, Bayern close runners-up and Arsenal to win it.”
Barcelona Threaten To Crash The Party
Football analyst Guillem Balague, however, believes Barcelona could emerge as one of the biggest threats to PSG, Arsenal and Bayern.
According to Balague, PSG’s uneven start to the campaign highlights the enormous challenge facing Luis Enrique as he attempts to maintain the standards required to dominate Europe.
“With PSG’s irregular start to the season we are seeing how difficult it is to maintain the level,” Balague said.
He noted that Enrique continues to demand an aggressive, high-intensity style built around dynamic football and relentless pressing.
“Luis Enrique continues to push the team to be in the vanguard of football which is demanding, with dynamic football and relentless pressure,” he added.
Balague expects PSG to use the league phase to experiment and prepare for the decisive stages of the competition from January.
“With the league phase considered a place to experiment and prepare for the second half of the season, there will be a time of transition and strange results before the crunch time in January onwards,” he said.
Nevertheless, he believes PSG remain firmly in contention.
“As the main axis is there, I expect them to get very close to winning it again,” Balague said.
But Barcelona’s form has caught his attention.
“Barcelona are flying,” he declared, suggesting the Catalan giants could have a major say in the destination of the trophy.
Balague believes Barcelona still need reinforcements at centre-back and centre-forward to reach their absolute peak, but insists Hansi Flick’s side are already heading towards the summit.
“Those three should be in the semis unless they meet before,” he said, referring to PSG, Barcelona and Arsenal.
He identified Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City as the leading candidates to claim the fourth semi-final berth, depending on the draw.

Arsenal return to the Champions League with unfinished business after reaching the final last season for the first time since 2005-06, when they suffered defeat against Barcelona.
Now, with the experience of last season’s run behind them and a defence widely regarded as among Europe’s strongest, the Gunners enter the new campaign with growing belief that they can finally conquer Europe.
But standing in their way are three-time ambitions from PSG, a resurgent Barcelona, Bayern Munich’s European pedigree, Real Madrid’s star power and Manchester City’s relentless pursuit of continental glory.
