Former Kogi West senator and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dino Melaye, has urged Nigerians to carefully consider the kind of leadership they want when they vote in the 2027 presidential election.
Melaye, in a post on X on Saturday, framed the election as a major choice between contrasting leadership qualities, arguing that voters would have an opportunity to determine the political direction of the country.
The former senator posed a series of rhetorical questions to Nigerians, contrasting what he described as dishonesty with sincerity, incompetence with capacity, and divisive politics with national unity.
“Nigeria, what type of President do you want? A compound liar or a sincere Democrat?” Melaye wrote.
He went on to make a number of serious allegations against unnamed political figures, including claims relating to drug use and external influence over political leadership.
Melaye did not provide evidence in the post to substantiate those allegations, and the material provided did not include a response from President Bola Tinubu, the Presidency or the All Progressives Congress.
The ADC chieftain also asked Nigerians whether they wanted what he described as “a tribal jingoist or pan Nigerian” and “an incompetent leader or a leader with enormous capacity.”
Continuing his criticism, Melaye questioned whether Nigerians preferred “a President who is happy to see you in pain or one concerned about your wellbeing.”
He also contrasted what he portrayed as a leader controlled by external interests with one accountable to the Nigerian people.
The former lawmaker further criticised what he described as excessive foreign travel by political leaders, saying Nigerians should instead demand a President who would remain actively involved in supervising development projects across the country.
“A jet setting lifestyle President or one who will supervise projects across Nigeria?” he asked.
Melaye concluded by portraying the 2027 election as an opportunity for Nigerians to choose between two sharply different political directions.
“2027 is an opportunity to decide whether we want light or we want to continue in darkness,” he said.
The comments represent the latest in a series of political attacks by Melaye against the Tinubu administration as opposition parties intensify their campaigns ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Melaye has in recent days criticised several aspects of the President’s political record and campaign arrangements while promoting the ADC as an alternative to the ruling APC.
With campaigning gathering momentum, rhetoric between opposition figures and members of the ruling party has become increasingly confrontational as both sides seek to shape public perception ahead of the election.
The 2027 presidential contest is expected to centre heavily on economic conditions, security, governance, political accountability and the records of the leading candidates.
Melaye’s intervention suggests that opposition figures will also seek to frame the election around questions of character, leadership style and public trust.
For voters, however, the claims and counterclaims emerging from the political campaigns are expected to face increasing scrutiny as Nigerians assess the candidates and parties seeking control of the presidency in 2027.
