Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck was locked in a tense confrontation with police officers in Lagos on Saturday after they attempted to take him into custody following an event.
A video of the encounter, which quickly circulated online, showed the artiste challenging the officers’ authority to arrest him at the venue while insisting that his lawyers had already responded to an earlier police invitation.
In the footage, one of the officers questioned why the rapper was unwilling to accompany the police after an invitation had allegedly been sent to him.
“Invitation was sent to you, it’s okay. What I want to ask you now, are you resisting an arrest? If you’re not resisting an arrest, tell me why you are not following the police?” the officer asked.
Odumodublvck rejected the suggestion that he was resisting arrest.
Instead, he argued that the issue had already been taken up by his legal representatives and questioned the officers’ jurisdiction to remove him from the venue.
“You don’t have any jurisdiction, that’s what you want to do. Don’t tell me to wait,” he said.
The rapper claimed that police officers had earlier visited his residence and communicated with people in his estate regarding the matter.
According to him, the development prompted him to contact his lawyers, who subsequently went to the police on his behalf.
“My lawyers came to your office, I am not resisting arrest, it was attended to,” he said.
The exchange became increasingly heated as the officers maintained that an invitation had been issued to him.
Odumodublvck, however, repeatedly insisted that responding through his lawyers meant the matter had already been addressed.
He also referred to a court process which, according to him, prevented the officers from taking him into custody.
“I am not resisting an arrest. There is a motion ex parte that says you cannot arrest me. Why should I follow you? It is illegal,” he was quoted as saying in footage of the encounter.
One report said an officer responded that the police had not received the court document at the time of the confrontation.
Odumodublvck also accused the officers of attempting to restrict his ability to speak publicly about the dispute.
“It is illegal to take me from here, my brother. You’re telling me not to tweet, not to speak,” he said.
The video ended with the rapper continuing to challenge the officers while maintaining that his lawyers were already handling the matter.
The confrontation immediately attracted attention on social media, where clips of the argument circulated widely and triggered debate over the circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest.
However, the exact allegation for which the police sought to take Odumodublvck into custody was not officially disclosed in the reports available at the time.
An associate of the rapper reportedly claimed that a document was shown to the officers and suggested that the development might be connected to an ongoing legal dispute involving the artiste.
That claim had not been independently confirmed by the police.
