Former House of Representatives member Aminu Danmaliki has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), saying his decision was driven by principle and a desire to address Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Danmaliki, who represented Bauchi Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, announced his defection during a press briefing on Saturday, describing the move as the outcome of “careful reflection, sincere consultation and prayerful consideration.”
“Today is not simply about changing political parties. It is about choosing principles over convenience. It is about choosing conviction over comfort. It is about choosing the people over power,” he said.
The former lawmaker stressed that he bore no resentment towards the APC but believed the time had come to embrace a platform better aligned with his vision for governance.
“I have decided to resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress and formally join the Peoples Redemption Party. I do so without bitterness. I do so without malice. I do so with respect for those with whom I have worked over the years,” he stated.
Danmaliki decried the country’s economic hardship, saying millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with hunger, unemployment, poor healthcare and limited access to quality education.
“Government exists to protect, empower and improve the lives of citizens, not to deepen their suffering,” he said, adding that the PRP’s ideals of social justice, accountability, quality education, affordable healthcare, rural development and economic empowerment remain relevant to Nigeria’s current realities.
Turning to Bauchi State, Danmaliki said the state possesses enormous agricultural, mineral and human resources but has failed to realise its full potential due to poor leadership and inconsistent implementation of people-oriented policies.
Reflecting on his public service career as a journalist, commissioner, lawmaker, entrepreneur and President of the Bauchi Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, he said his focus had always been on improving the welfare of the people.
Danmaliki also endorsed Senator Shehu Buba as the PRP’s preferred candidate for the 2027 Bauchi governorship election, describing him as “a man of courage, vision and commitment.”
He pledged to mobilise his political structures and experience to support the party’s success and urged youths, women, farmers, artisans, traders, professionals, traditional rulers and religious leaders to rally behind the PRP.
Expressing optimism about the future, Danmaliki said Nigeria and Bauchi State could overcome poverty and achieve sustainable development through honest leadership, prudent resource management and people-centred governance.
