The Maritime Component of Operation Whirl Stroke has issued a fresh safety advisory to mariners, boat operators and riverine communities, warning that rising water levels caused by the ongoing rainy season have significantly increased the risk of accidents on inland waterways.
The advisory, issued on the directive of the Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, comes amid growing concerns over the dangers posed by strong currents, turbulence and flooding across waterways within the Joint Operations Area.
Speaking through a statement, the Maritime Component Commander, Lieutenant Commander Dusse Christopher Zakari, said the increase in water volume has created hazardous navigation conditions that could lead to boat mishaps, loss of lives and destruction of property if strict safety measures are not observed.
“The ongoing rainy season has resulted in a significant rise in water levels. This increase is often accompanied by strong currents and turbulence, posing serious risks to water transportation and other riverine activities,” Zakari warned.
In response to the heightened risks, Operation Whirl Stroke directed all passengers and mariners to wear life jackets at all times while on board boats and ferries. Boat operators were also ordered to ensure the availability of life buoys and other emergency equipment, including torchlights, spare spark plugs and protective tarpaulins.
The security outfit further reiterated its ban on overloading boats, describing the practice as a major contributor to waterway disasters.
In a move aimed at enhancing safety and security, the Maritime Component also reaffirmed the prohibition of night sailing, directing that all marine transportation activities be restricted to between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily.
The command stressed that all boat operators must be registered with their respective unions and carry valid means of identification while operating on the waterways.
Residents of riverine communities were equally urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or criminal activities to security agencies.
Lieutenant Commander Zakari warned that violators of the safety directives would face sanctions in line with existing regulations, while calling on maritime unions to ensure strict compliance among their members.
The latest advisory underscores growing concerns over recurring boat accidents during the rainy season, a period often marked by swollen rivers, flooding and treacherous water conditions across parts of the country.
Operation Whirl Stroke maintained that it remains committed to protecting lives, securing waterways and safeguarding economic activities in riverine communities, urging all stakeholders to cooperate with security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies.
