At least 13 people were killed on Thursday after suspected jihadists launched a coordinated dawn attack on Diori Hamani International Airport in Niger’s capital, Niamey, triggering hours of intense gunfire and a major security response.
Officials said the assault left 11 soldiers and two civilians dead, while security forces also killed about 22 attackers during the fierce exchange.
The raid, which began early in the morning near a security checkpoint, prompted a large-scale military deployment and sweeping operations in surrounding neighbourhoods as troops moved to restore order and secure the airport.
