The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has intensified efforts to strengthen data privacy awareness and compliance across the country through strategic partnerships with traditional institutions and academia.
This was disclosed during a courtesy visit by the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Epe Division of Lagos State and Royal Ambassador of the NDPC, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
During the visit, the leadership of the NDPC congratulated the monarch on his recent appointment as the sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University, describing the appointment as a recognition of his exemplary leadership and contributions to national development.
The meeting focused on expanding public awareness of data protection and fostering stronger collaborations to promote a culture of privacy in Nigeria. Both parties explored opportunities for partnership between the NDPC and LASU, including plans to host the Digital Privacy Awareness Campaign (DPAC) within the university community and establish a Data Privacy Club aimed at increasing student engagement on privacy and data protection issues.
A major highlight of the discussions was the monarch’s proposal for the establishment of a Data Protection and Privacy Centre at LASU.
According to the commission, the proposed centre would serve as a hub for research, innovation, capacity building, public enlightenment and the promotion of global best practices in data protection.
The NDPC noted that as Nigeria advances its digital transformation agenda, collaboration among government agencies, traditional institutions and educational establishments will be critical to raising awareness, improving compliance and protecting the privacy rights of citizens.
The commission also expressed appreciation to the Alara of Ilara Kingdom for his continued support of its mandate, expressing optimism that the partnership would yield significant benefits for data protection advocacy and capacity development in the country.
It further stressed that promoting data privacy awareness requires the collective efforts of all sectors of society, adding that the growing support from stakeholders reflects increasing recognition of the importance of safeguarding personal data in the digital age.
