In a major boost for Nigeria’s growing influence in Africa’s aviation sector, United Nigeria Airlines has secured a landmark agreement with the Government of Guinea-Bissau to establish and operate the West African nation’s new national carrier, AIR BISSAU.
The deal, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Bissau, marks a significant milestone for both countries and positions the Nigerian airline at the forefront of efforts to reshape regional air connectivity across West Africa.
The agreement was signed by Guinea-Bissau’s Minister, Dr. Florentino Mendes Pereira, and the Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo.
Under the arrangement, United Nigeria Airlines will provide the majority investment required to launch the carrier, supply aircraft, and deploy its operational expertise to ensure the successful takeoff of AIR BISSAU. The airline will also spearhead the training and development of indigenous aviation professionals as part of plans to build local capacity in the sector.
AIR BISSAU will operate as Guinea-Bissau’s official national airline and will be headquartered at the Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau.
Industry observers say the partnership represents a bold vote of confidence in the capabilities of Nigerian aviation operators and could open a new era of collaboration among African nations seeking to strengthen air transport networks, boost trade and tourism, and deepen economic integration.
For Guinea-Bissau, the agreement signals a fresh attempt to establish a sustainable national carrier capable of connecting the country more effectively to regional and international destinations. Speaking after the signing ceremony, both parties described the partnership as a transformative step toward enhancing connectivity, stimulating economic growth, and projecting Guinea-Bissau more prominently on the global aviation map.
The agreement is expected to accelerate aviation development in the Portuguese-speaking nation while strengthening ties between Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau through increased commercial and transportation links.
