Nigerian singer Omawumi Megbele has weighed in on the ongoing debate about modern relationships, asserting that romance has always involved some level of exchange, contrary to claims that it is a recent development.
In a recent interview with Pulse, the “Bottom Belle” crooner explained that while relationships have long been transactional, the expectations tied to them have significantly evolved over time.
According to her, the cost of impressing a romantic partner has increased due to modernisation and rising living expenses.
She noted that during her younger years, simple gestures like buying ice cream or popcorn were enough to win affection, whereas today, more expensive gifts such as smartphones are often expected.
Omawumi also pointed out that society tends to exaggerate the transactional nature of relationships by overlooking the role women play in reciprocating effort and value.
She further argued that some men inadvertently create the situation they complain about by choosing partners whose lifestyles and expectations demand higher financial commitment.
