South Africa Replaces Morocco As Host Of 2026 WAFCON

South Africa will replace Morocco as host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following Morocco’s withdrawal just 60 days before the tournament’s scheduled start.

The change was confirmed on Sunday by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, who announced that the country would host the tournament from March 17 to April 3, 2026.

Speaking at the Super League Awards ceremony in Johannesburg, Mabe said the competition would also serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Morocco’s withdrawal has raised questions, coming shortly after the country hosted the men’s Africa Cup of Nations. While neither Moroccan authorities nor the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued an official explanation, reports suggest the decision may be linked to domestic tensions following the AFCON final in Rabat.

The 2026 edition will feature an expanded 16-team format, though it is unclear if the tournament dates will change due to the late switch in hosts.

Despite the short notice, South Africa brings experience, having hosted and won the competition in 2022. The tournament carries added importance, with the four semi-finalists qualifying automatically for the 2027
