Zelensky Replaces Ukraine’s Security Chief Amid Wartime Shake-Up

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has replaced long-serving Security Service (SBU) chief Vasyl Malyuk, appointing Maj-Gen Yevhenii Khmara as acting head of the powerful agency.

The SBU plays a central role in Ukraine’s internal security, counter-intelligence and covert operations against Russia, including sabotage and targeted strikes inside Russian territory since the 2022 invasion.

Malyuk, who had led the agency since 2022, became widely known for overseeing major operations against Russian forces, including last year’s “Spider Web” drone attack on Russian air bases. His removal sparked criticism among some military figures, although Zelensky said Malyuk would continue leading special operations.

Khmara, who was involved in planning the Spider Web operation and has battlefield experience in Donetsk, has been nominated to stabilise the agency and maintain its effectiveness.

His appointment must still be confirmed by parliament, as Ukraine continues to reshuffle its leadership while facing mounting military pressure from Russia.
