Touadéra Wins Third Term In CAR Amid Opposition Protests

President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has been re-elected for a third term in the Central African Republic, winning more than 76 per cent of the vote, according to provisional results released by the electoral authority.

His closest challenger, Anicet-Georges Dologuele, polled about 15 per cent, while Henri-Marie Dondra came third with three per cent.

Touadéra campaigned on a promise of stabilising the country through dialogue with armed groups, saying peace was returning because of his policy of outreach and reconciliation.

About 2.4 million citizens were registered to vote in the elections, which were held simultaneously for presidential, legislative, regional and municipal offices. Voter turnout was put at around 52 per cent.

While Touadéra’s supporters celebrated in the capital, Bangui, opposition figures rejected the outcome, describing the vote as flawed and alleging widespread irregularities.

The government has dismissed the allegations and warned against unrest, while African Union observers said the polls were conducted peacefully. Final results are expected later this month after the resolution of any appeals.
