Trump Seeks Death Penalty For Murders In U.S. Capital

President Donald Trump on Tuesday vowed to enforce the death penalty for murders committed in Washington, D.C., as part of a sweeping crime crackdown.

“If somebody kills somebody in the capital, we’re going to be seeking the death penalty,” Trump said at a White House cabinet meeting, calling it a strong deterrent.

The move follows his deployment of the National Guard and federal takeover of D.C.’s police earlier this month.

Washington abolished the death penalty in 1981, but Trump has leveraged the city’s unique federal status to tighten control, citing rising crime and homelessness.

He boasted of a recent streak of days without killings and hinted at extending similar measures to Democrat-run cities like Chicago, New York, and Baltimore.
