“You Restored My Rank, My Honour, Did A Lot For Nigeria” – Gowon Praises IBB

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has expressed gratitude to ex-Military President Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) for his role in restoring his rank and honor, as well as his contributions to Nigeria’s development.

Gowon made this statement on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of a book written by Babangida, where he reflected on their long-standing relationship.

“I had a very rough time in government, I was even charged with treason,” Gowon said. “Later on, President Shagari rescinded that order, and you (IBB) in the end restored my rank and honour. You did quite a lot for the country.”

He highlighted their friendship, which has spanned several decades, acknowledging Babangida’s impact on the nation and on his personal journey.

The book launch brought together a host of dignitaries, including former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who also praised Babangida’s legacy and their deep friendship.

“My relationship with Ibrahim has gone a long way—over 80 years,” Abdulsalami noted. “Ibrahim, I want to thank you again for your friendship and brotherhood.

 No moment goes by when we remember our escapades without bringing smiles to our faces. May these smiles continue during our twilight.”

Also in attendance was former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lauded Babangida’s efforts in documenting Nigeria’s history.

Jonathan urged the Federal Government to invest in preserving presidential libraries, emphasizing their importance in shaping Nigeria’s historical records.

“If you contribute to the documentation of history, it makes your history stronger and more relevant,” he said. “So today, you are helping us.”

The event saw the presence of past and present leaders, underscoring Babangida’s lasting influence on Nigeria’s political and historical landscape.
