Lagos Govt Increases BRT Fares By 18%, Cites Rising Operational Costs

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, citing rising operational costs as the reason for the adjustment.

In a notice issued on Thursday, LAMATA confirmed that the new fares will take effect next week, urging passengers to show understanding and cooperation.

“The fare increase is due to the rising cost of operations and the need to ensure that buses keep running efficiently across Lagos,” the statement read.

In November 2023, the Lagos State Government canceled the 50% transport fare discount introduced earlier in the year to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

In July 2023, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reduced transport fares by 25% on all routes to alleviate economic hardship.

With this latest fare adjustment, commuters will have to pay more for BRT services, as the government seeks to maintain sustainable public transportation.
