PDP Suffers Another Blow As Rep Member Defects To APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost another member of the House of Representatives to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Rep. Salisu Koko, representing Koko-Besse/Maiyama Constituency of Kebbi State, officially switched parties.

Koko’s defection was announced during plenary on Wednesday by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who welcomed him into the ruling APC.

His move follows that of Rep. Amos Magaji (Zango Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency, Kaduna), who defected to the APC just a day earlier.

According to Speaker Abbas, Koko attributed his decision to the ongoing crisis within the opposition PDP.

However, Minority Leader Kingsley Chindachallenged this claim, stating that the PDP was not facing any “protracted” crisis.

Chinda further urged the House to recognize the constitutional consequences of defection, arguing that Koko’s seat should be vacated.

Rep. Ben Etanabene echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that lawmakers who defect without justifiable reasons risk losing their seats.

Despite these objections, Speaker Abbas overruled the point of order, stating that the House lacked the authority to enforce such constitutional provisions.

Instead, he advised the aggrieved lawmakers to seek redress through the appropriate legal channels.

This latest defection marks yet another setback for the PDP, as the APC continues to consolidate its influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
