The countdown to the 67th Grammy Awards has begun, and Nigeria’s music industry is buzzing with anticipation as Burna Boy, Davido, Rema, Tems, Yemi Alade, and Asake prepare to compete for top honors.
The awards, set to take place today at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, promise a night of fierce competition and unforgettable performances.
The Nigerian superstars have secured nominations across major categories such as Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best R&B Song. Tems leads with three nods, while Burna Boy makes history as the first African artist to garner Grammy nominations for six consecutive years.
With his latest hit “Higher” from the album I Told Them., Burna Boy aims to clinch his second Grammy, facing off against formidable contenders including Yemi Alade, Asake, Tems, and a collaboration featuring Chris Brown, Davido, and Lojay.
Tems, a standout nominee this year, is in the running in three categories. Her nominations include Best African Music Performance for “Love Me Jeje”, Best Global Music Album for her debut Born in the Wild, and Best R&B Song for “Burning” from the same album.
Following her previous Grammy win for Future’s “Wait for U,” expectations are high that she could add another trophy to her collection.
New faces on the Grammy stage include Yemi Alade, Asake, and Rema. Yemi Alade’s nomination for Best African Music Performance with “Tomorrow” highlights her relentless work ethic and artistic resilience, marking a milestone as one of the leading Nigerian female artists. Rema, recognized for his work on Best Global Music Album with “HEIS,” and Asake, nominated for Best African Music Performance for “MMS” featuring Wizkid, are both poised for breakthrough moments on the global stage.
Internationally acclaimed artist Angélique Kidjo is also in contention. The Beninese-French singer could reshape her legacy with a win for Best Global Music Performance for her collaboration with the Soweto Choir on “Sunlight To My Soul,” competing against Ghana’s reggae and Afro-Roots star Rocky Dawuni.
Adding star power to the event, pop icon Beyoncé headlines the evening with an impressive 11 nominations, including Best Country Album for Cowboy Carter. Beyoncé is on track to make history as the most-nominated female artist in a single year, with other major nominees including Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone.
Trevor Noah, nominated for Best Comedy Album, returns as host for the fifth consecutive year. In addition to his role as master of ceremonies, Noah will also serve as a producer for the event.
While several traditional Grammy Week events have been canceled, this year’s show takes on a dual purpose as a fundraising effort to support wildfire relief in Los Angeles. The Recording Academy and MusiCares have committed over $3.2 million in emergency aid for music professionals affected by the wildfires.
The event will be broadcast live on CBS, with streaming available on Paramount for Showtime subscribers and on-demand for Paramount Essential users the following day.
The pre-show promises additional excitement with a star-studded lineup featuring Yolanda Adams, Wayne Brady, Deborah Cox, and many others. Confirmed performers include global acts such as Shakira, Billie Eilish, and Charli XCX, alongside emerging talents like Sabrina Carpenter, Benson Boone, Doechii, RAYE, and Teddy Swims.
Other notable performers scheduled for the ceremony include Stevie Wonder, Cynthia Erivo, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Lainey Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Brittany Howard, Brad Paisley, Janelle Monáe, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, St. Vincent, and Jacob Collier.
