New Lagos Assembly Speaker Meranda Seeks GAC’s Blessings

Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the newly elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) on Tuesday to seek their “blessings” following her historic election.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Meranda, the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos Assembly, explained, “I came to brief the GAC about what transpired at the House of Assembly yesterday and to seek their blessings, which we have received.”

The GAC, established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is the apex decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

The council’s endorsement is seen as crucial for political stability and success within the state.

The meeting, held at Lagos House in Marina, was attended by key members of the council, led by Tajudeen Olusi.

 However, the GAC declined to issue an official statement following the closed-door session.

Meranda’s election as Speaker followed the impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, on Monday over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation.

The Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, was also removed, and all standing committees of the Assembly were dissolved.

The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was reportedly out of the country for an official engagement during the developments.

As Meranda begins her tenure, she has called for the support and cooperation of key stakeholders to ensure effective governance in Lagos State.
