Meet Mojisola Meranda, The First Female Speaker, Lagos State House Of Assembly

In a landmark session on Monday, Mojisola Meranda made history by taking the oath of office as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. 

Her inauguration followed the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa during the plenary session.

The suspension of the House Clerk, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, was also announced indefinitely, while Mr. Mojeed Fatai was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

Here are key highlights about her background:

1. Born in August 1980 in Lagos, Nigeria, Meranda began her education at Randle Primary School and later attended Anglican Girls Grammar School and Ansar-Ud-Deen Secondary School, where she obtained her West African Senior Certificate in 1998.
2. She furthered her education with a Certificate in Software Development (Network Engineering) from NIIT and earned a B.Sc. in Public Administration from Lagos State University in 2013.
3. In 2020, she completed a Master’s in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos. Currently, she is pursuing an MBA in Public Sector Management at the University of York, UK.
4. Meranda’s career spans various sectors, including serving as a personal assistant in information technology and later managing director/CEO of Worthline International Services Limited, a company she founded.
5. Her political journey began in the Alliance for Democracy (AD), transitioning through the Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and eventually to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
6. During her tenure in the 8th Assembly, Meranda chaired critical committees such as Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) and Establishment, Training, Pension, and Public Service.
7. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to her new role. She was elected to represent her constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015.

Meranda’s ascendancy to the speakership marks a significant milestone in Lagos State’s political landscape, underscoring her dedication to public service and leadership in governance.
