With the politicking and strategizing for the 2027 General Election in full swing already, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed optimism about reclaiming central power in the 2027 general elections.
In addition, the party is optimistic of producing more state governors during the election.
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) expressed the optimism during a visit to Governor Douye Diri at his hometown in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State over the weekend.
They based their optimism on readiness to address national discontent and economic challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the NWC, National Treasurer Alhaji Ahmed Yayare said the widespread economic hardship under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had created a favorable ground for PDP’s resurgence.
“Nothing stops the PDP producing the president and the vice president in 2027. The cry of hunger and poverty is too much in the land”.
“The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for the return of PDP. The APC cannot go out to campaign because they will be stoned. Nigeria is in your hands. We need your support to salvage Nigeria.”
“The cries of hunger and poverty across the land show Nigerians are yearning for the PDP’s return. If we don’t reclaim leadership in 2027, it might signal the end of democracy in Nigeria,” Yayare said.
He further noted the party’s ambition to secure the presidency, emphasizing that PDP is the only viable opposition capable of salvaging the nation.
He urged party governors and stakeholders to unite and support this vision, adding that the NWC would work tirelessly to strengthen the party’s presence in all PDP-controlled states.
The visit also served as an opportunity to condole with Governor Diri over the deaths of retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Moses Jituboh and Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.
PDP National Secretary Ude Okoye reiterated the NWC’s commitment to repositioning the party as a credible alternative for Nigerians.
He praised Governor Diri for his exemplary leadership and developmental strides, urging all governors to prioritize unity within the party.
In response, Governor Diri emphasized the importance of solidarity among PDP members.
“As governors, we must work closely and resolve issues through consensus. If PDP dies in our hands, history will not forgive us,” he said, adding that personal interests should not override party loyalty.
Diri also supported the idea of a PDP-led mega party to strengthen its chances of reclaiming power in 2027, calling on members to cleanse internal divisions and bolster the party’s integrity.

The PDP leadership’s visit signals a renewed push for unity and strategy as the party positions itself as a formidable contender in Nigeria’s next general election.
Meanwhile, as the party is expressing optimism of upstaging the ruling party, a former chairman of the party in Abia State, Senator Emma Nwaka, has dumped the party for the APC.
Nwaka’s defection is coming six months after he had “quietly resigned” his membership in PDP on June 12, 2024, which he later made public on August 30, 2024, citing “personal reasons.”
Nwaka, who was a governorship aspirant of PDP in the 2023 general election, had earlier sparked speculation about his membership in the APC when a photograph surfaced showing him receiving an APC membership card in his Oguduasa Ward 5.
He was presented with an APC membership card by the party’s chairman for Oguduasa Ward 5, Sampson Achi Ndukwe.
The APC chairman for Isuikwuato Local Government, Chief Udochi Okorie and other party officials witnessed the event.
A political aide of the senator confirmed the development to journalists, promising that Nwaka would soon speak to the public about his decision.

Most of the party chieftains that have so far left Abia PDP, including the immediate past Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, have found their way into APC, the party that presently calls the shots in Nigeria.
Nwaka, who was in charge of Abia PDP between 2010 and 2015, piloted the affairs of the party when it completely dominated the political space in God’s own state.
