It was a black Sunday in Delta State as a tanker ladened with petrol lost control and burst into flames leaving several people dead while properties worth millions of naira were razed by the inferno.
The accident occurred in the Agbor Ika South Local Government Area near the Orogodo River along old Lagos Asaba Express Road
Residents of the area were seen in viral videos scampering for safety as the raging fire devoured the tanker and nearby buildings and structures.
First Bank and Access Bank buildings were reportedly affected by the fire, while two vehicles were burnt.
Reacting to the unfortunate incident, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed his deepest sympathies to the families affected by the tragic fire incident.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori conveyed his condolences to the Ika South Local Government and community, denouncing the incident as horrific.

He offered prayers for the rapid recovery of the injured and strength for the families of those who lost their lives.
The Governor has instructed the State Ministry of Health, the State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant organizations to take immediate action to provide essential support to all those impacted by the incident.
He also commended the efforts of the Fire Service, local residents of Ika South, and security agencies for their swift response in extinguishing the flames and assisting those affected by this unfortunate event.
This is the latest in the series on petrol tanker inferno on the country. n October 2024, a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State killed more than 170 people, with scores injured.
Similarly, at least 59 people died in September when a fuel tanker collided with a truck carrying passengers and cattle in northwestern Niger state.
