South Africa Sends Special Envoy To Address Mozambique Election Unrest

South Africa has dispatched a special envoy, Sydney Mufamadi, to Mozambique to meet with the outgoing president in a bid to quell escalating violence following Mozambique’s disputed October elections.

President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized South Africa’s solidarity with its neighbor and expressed concern over the potential spread of unrest, prompting increased security along the shared border.

The unrest erupted after Mozambique’s Constitutional Council confirmed the ruling Frelimo party’s victory, a result rejected by opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane.

Mondlane has alleged electoral fraud and called on supporters to organize mass protests, which have led to widespread violence, including looting and arson targeting Frelimo offices and police stations.

The instability has also enabled hundreds of inmates to escape from a high-security prison in the capital, Maputo.

Since the protests began, dozens of people have been killed, deepening the crisis in the country.
