JUST IN: NNPCL Announces Resumption Of Operations At Warri Refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the resumption of operations at the Warri Refining & Petrochemicals Company (WRPC) in Delta State.

 This comes just weeks after the commencement of operations at the old Port Harcourt Refinery.  

During a tour of the 125,000-barrel-per-day facility on Monday, NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, confirmed the development.

Accompanied by Farouk Ahmed, CEO of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Kyari showcased the progress made at the refinery.

In a video posted by Channels TV, Kyari remarked, “This plant is running. Although it is not 100 per cent complete, we are in the process. Many people think real progress is impossible in this country. We want you to see that it is real.”  

Located in Ekpan, Uwvie, and Ubeji areas of Warri, the petrochemical plant produces 13,000 metric tonnes of polypropylene and 18,000 metric tonnes of carbon black annually. 

Commissioned in 1978, the WRPC primarily serves markets in Nigeria’s southern and southwestern regions.  

The initial mechanical completion of the facility was slated for Q1 2024, as disclosed by NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye.  

This development marks a significant milestone for NNPCL as the WRPC joins the old and new Port Harcourt Refining Company and the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company in bolstering Nigeria’s refining capacity.
