The Nigerian Senate has denied reports suggesting it has suspended deliberations on the Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele addressed the matter during Thursday’s plenary, citing a misunderstanding of legislative procedures in media reports.
“It was inaccurately reported that the Senate had halted further consideration of the tax reform bills. This is not reflected in our votes and proceedings,” Bamidele stated, raising Senate Point of Order 42. He clarified that the bills remain under review and were never withdrawn or suspended.

“These bills, transmitted by the executive arm through the President’s office, cannot be withdrawn except by the executive itself,” he explained. “They are not private member bills; no senator has the authority to withdraw them.”
Bamidele further highlighted the Senate’s referral of the bills to the Finance Committee, which has six weeks to produce a report. This timeline, he noted, allows for consultations and the resolution of any concerns in the public interest.
In response to perceived external pressures, Bamidele emphasized that attempts to intimidate the legislature are undemocratic and unwelcome. “We encourage consensus, discussions, and engagement at all levels,” he said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio reiterated that lawmakers are committed to fulfilling their constitutional roles with integrity. He underscored that the bills remain active, having passed a second reading, and that the legislative process includes public hearings and committee consultations.

“Social media commentary or external forums cannot dictate our process. Our focus remains on lawmaking for the collective good of Nigeria,” Akpabio stated.
The Senate had earlier set up an internal committee, separate from the Finance Committee, led by the Minority Leader, to facilitate discussions and ensure smooth legislative progress.
The Tax Reform Bills aim to enhance Nigeria’s fiscal framework, and the Senate leadership has urged patience and understanding from the public as they navigate the legislative process.
