APC Alleges Obaseki Converting Political Appointees To Civil Servants 

Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has voiced concerns over alleged moves by outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki to convert political appointees into permanent civil servants just six days before leaving office.

Prince Kassim Afegbua, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) transition committee, issued a statement in Benin City on Wednesday, alleging that Obaseki is absorbing his Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) into full-time civil service roles.

 He claims this action bloats the state payroll, adding unnecessary financial burdens on the incoming administration, especially with Edo State already dealing with significant debt.

Afegbua disclosed that 186 new aides were appointed in September 2024, and an additional 152 are now reportedly in the process of being absorbed. 

He criticized Obaseki’s recent establishment of the Civil Service Commission, only weeks before his departure, despite having neglected civil service recruitment for most of his tenure.

The APC has warned that any recruitments made without due process may be reconsidered by the incoming administration.
