Power Minister Summons TCN, NERC Over Grid Collapse, Orders Forensic Probe

Concerned about two recent national grid collapses that plunged parts of the country into darkness, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, called an emergency meeting over the weekend with the leadership of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Bolaji Tunji, on Tuesday, Adelabu express his displeasure, warning that these incidents could undermine the progress made in the past year, which saw a record power generation of 5,527 megawatts.

To address the issue, Adelabu set up a forensic investigation committee to identify the root cause of the grid collapses, including the possibility of sabotage. The committee will also review ongoing government efforts, such as the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) and the Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project (NETAP), to ensure grid stability.

The six-member committee, led by Engr. Nafisat Ali, Executive Director of the Independent System Operator (ISO), has been tasked with making the national grid more robust and resilient. A technical team has also been deployed to assess critical vulnerabilities and recommend solutions to prevent future grid disruptions.

The committee is expected to submit its report by November 1, 2024.
