Former Lawmaker Released After Serving Five-Year Bribery Sentence

Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has been released after serving a five-year prison sentence for demanding and accepting a $500,000 bribe.

Lawan’s conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court on January 26, 2024. He was found guilty of soliciting a $3 million bribe from Nigerian billionaire oil tycoon Femi Otedola in 2012. 

At the time, Lawan chaired the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee investigating fuel subsidy fraud.
