Borno State Police Rearrest Escaped Convict Abubakar Mohammed After Maiduguri Flood Prison Break

The Borno State Police Command has rearrested Abubakar Mohammed, one of the convicts who escaped from the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Maiduguri following the collapse of the prison wall during the September 10 flood that hit the city and surrounding areas.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer for Borno, SP Ahmed Wakil.

According to Wakil, the police were tipped off by a resident who spotted Abubakar in Gubio town.

“The Borno Police Command is pleased to announce the successful rearrest of Abubakar Mohammed, 27, who was serving a sentence for culpable homicide. He escaped from the medium-security custodial centre in Maiduguri,” Wakil said.

On September 15, 2024, at around 3:00 p.m., a local resident of Bulakara Ward, Gubio LGA, informed the police after seeing the escaped convict. The police responded swiftly, leading to Abubakar’s capture.

He will be returned to the Nigerian Correctional Service, while efforts continue to track down other escaped inmates.

Recall The Matrix reports that over 280 inmates had escaped from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre after the prison’s walls were breached by the floodwaters.
