Japan Issues High Alert As Typhoon Shanshan Wreaks Havoc

Typhoon Shanshan, one of Japan’s strongest storms in decades, has caused widespread devastation across the country, claiming at least four lives and injuring over 90.

Millions of people have been affected by the severe weather, with hundreds of thousands losing power.

The southern island of Kyushu was particularly hard hit, as the typhoon made landfall near Kagoshima prefecture on Thursday morning.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a level five emergency alert, urging residents to seek shelter immediately or evacuate to higher ground.

Torrential rain, high winds, and landslides have caused significant damage, with buildings collapsing, trees uprooted, and vehicles overturned.

The storm’s destructive force led to the closure of major factories, such as those operated by Toyota and Nissan, due to safety concerns and potential supply chain disruptions.

Even before the typhoon’s arrival, a landslide in central Japan claimed the lives of three family members. Another fatality was reported later, as a man was trapped under a collapsed roof.

The JMA has issued rare “special warnings” for the most intense storms, cautioning residents about the dangers of flooding, landslides, and widespread damage.
