Rivers Community Displaced as Oil Spill Ravages Farmlands and Livelihoods

A very significant damage has been caused by the  recent oil spill from a Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) facility to the Rumuoduwere community in the Elelenwo clan of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State. The spill has  resulted to the evacuation of local residents due to safety  and environmental concerns.

Martin Enwuka reported that the contamination from the spill has polluted drinking water, destroyed crops, and harmed the local ecosystem. He emphasized the urgent need for a cleanup to help the community return to normal life.

The Rumuoduwere community has been struggling with the effects of Shell’s operations since 1957, without seeing much in terms of local development or job opportunities. Despite multiple attempts to engage with SPDC, there has been no response, and the Community Liaison Officer has been unresponsive.

The spill, which occurred on Sunday, has had a severe impact on local farmland and water sources. The community is now dealing with the consequences of this incident, which fits a troubling pattern of environmental damage linked to Shell’s activities.

Enwuka criticized Shell for its long-standing disregard for the community’s issues, pointing out the ongoing environmental harm and lack of meaningful response from the company.

In response to the situation, SPDC spokesperson Michael Adande, who was on leave, referred inquiries to his colleague Dayo Elusakin, who is expected to provide further information on Tuesday morning.
