Shiites Clash With Police In Abuja, 2 Officers Killed

A violent confrontation erupted in Abuja on Sunday, August 25, 2024 between members of the Shiite movement, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

The clash, which took place at the popular Julius Berger roundabout, resulted in the deaths of at least 2 police officers and 3 others injured.

Spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the situation, accusing the group of destroying three police patrol vehicles.

According to Adeh, the Shiite group attacked some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the FCT command at Wuse Junction by a traffic light.

Several individuals sustained gunshot wounds, and police patrol vehicles were set ablaze. Panic ensued as motorists sought to avoid the area, leading to traffic congestion and alternative routes being sought.

“The FCT police command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by the traffic light, where two (2) police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three (3) Police patrol vehicles set ablaze.

The incident has raised concerns about security and law and order in the nation’s capital.

The police PRO also indicated that they wielded machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives.

“The proscribed organisation attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives,” the statement read
